5 Local Swimwear Brands

Skin is in! Flaunt your style in one of these L.A.-made swimwear lines.
Sage Larock's sustainable swimwear makes for the perfect summer suit.

Co-founders Melanie Travis and Tess De Paula knew what they were doing with the launch of their classic, one-piece-only swim brand Andie. Just in time for summer, the made-in-L.A. brand features a “Build Your Own Box” concept allowing you to try on looks delivered straight to your doorstep. “Now, women can shop for swimsuits on their own terms from the comfort of their own home,” says De Paula. “They can take their time trying different styles with their own accessories, show their best friend and even enjoy a glass of wine while they shop.”

Leah Shlaer
After spending years studying dance and basically living in her leotards, Santa Fe native Leah Shlaer launched a swim collection with a nod to three of her favorite cities: Los Angeles, Santa Fe and Paris. With minimalism as this summer’s go-to trend, Shlaer is stepping outside the box using materials like special bungee cord on her Caviar bikini, and Italian straps with white mesh on the Vida suit. Who needs an ordinary bikini anyway?

Made By Dawn
Made By Dawn’s ruffle-trimmed suits and earthy, rich hues of color transport you to an entirely different era. Each cut—simultaneously classic and romantic—reminds you of a simpler time. As a Hawaii native, Dawn Peterson grew up in her swimsuit. The sand, the surf and the sun served as her inspiration as she and husband Kirk co-found the universal brand. With humble beginnings of making bikinis with her grandmother’s sewing machine, she’s now designed countless collections including her new 2017 line, Aurora. The collection features timeless suits like the Jeanie two-piece with a cream lattice pattern that comes complete with intricate detailing and a halter ruffle trim.

Sage Larock
L.A.-based model, designer and lover of all things aquatic Taryn Sage Larock values sustainability as much as she does luxury. In fact, her eco-conscious brand only uses low-impact and plant-based dyes to create beautiful, limited edition pieces. “Using upcycled materials like recycled fishing lines and plastic debris recovered from the ocean to draw awareness to the crisis of plastic pollution in the ocean is very important to us,” says Larock. “We’ve aligned ourselves with key non-profits such as Canopy and Healthy Seas to raise awareness, which I believe fashion can be a great platform for.” The 2017 swimwear collection features clean, geometric shapes and barely-there colors to let your inner beauty shine far beyond your swimsuit.

Yemaya Swimwear
Unleash your inner ocean goddess in one of these carefully crafted swimsuits. Adventurer Carla Pallares draws inspiration from her South American and Spanish roots as she grew up watching her mother crochet and make clothing by hand. Pallares eventually launched her own bohemian-inspired line of handmade swimwear made by local swim artisans and mindfully designed in the city of Santa Monica. Each piece, made with a special non-pinch elastic for maximum comfort and fit, is named after the amazing women in her life and incredible places she’s traveled to.
