Whether you like to meticulously decode each sip or are just a fervent wine enthusiast, L.A. has the perfect spots to enjoy the finest vino. From the rare and unusual labels to casual wine rooms with a expert staff, these are our favorite spots to grab a glass.
A wine connoisseur's dream is available along with seasonal small plates at the art deco-inspired Ester's Wine Bar & Shop.

1. A.O.C. Wine Bar
You may confuse the wine list here with your copy of Ulysses. The extensive—and we mean extensive—selection of wines from around the globe are all curated by the great sommelier and wine director Caroline Styne. Pick anyone you like; they are all chosen to pair well with chef Suzanne Goin’s tapas-style menu. 8700 W. 3rd St., L.A., 310.859.9859

2. Augustine Wine Bar
This is the spot for true oenophiles looking to sip something rare. Augustine Wine Bar carries a sizable selection of vintage wines, and serves them by the glass, with their oldest label dating back to 1860. 13456 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks, 818.990.0938

3. Bar Covell
With renowned sommelier Matthew Kaner and Dustin Lancaster at the helm, this intimate wine bar never disappoints. Rather than selecting the vino from a traditional list, the staff instead steers you toward something you’re bound to love, and there are plenty of options. Bar Covell has a selection of 150 wines from around the world, all served by the glass. Between sips, nosh on a variety of charcuterie platters and small plates. 4628 Hollywood Blvd., L.A., 323.660.4400
4. Esters Wine Bar & Shop
This Westside newcomer has become a fast favorite. The wine shop moonlights as a bar—or maybe it is the other way around—so that you can simultaneously sip and shop the robust selection of imports and small batch labels. The set-up (which can also accommodate private tastings) is part of the Rustic Canyon Family of restaurants, which means the Jeremy Fox-designed menu holds up to the impeccable wine selection. 1314 7th St., Santa Monica, 310.899.6900

5. Vintage Enoteca
If it is something different you’re after, this staple wine lounge will have it. Their Old World wine list has unusual finds, like Plavac Mali ($50) from Croatia and Alfrocheiro ($36) from Portugal. The standard winemaking regions—from France to California—also make the list, ensuring no one leaves disappointed. 7554 W. Sunset Blvd., L.A., 323.512.5278
