As fall approaches and triple-digit temperatures start to drop, the allure of the desert becomes increasingly magnetic. Trek east to Joshua Tree to escape the grind of L.A. The Wi-Fi may be weak, but isn’t that the point? Let our guide be your touchstone for a transformative and relaxing weekend off the grid.
The master bedroom at Casa Mami looks out over the Yucca Valley. Items throughout the design retreat, like the Cylinder Back armchair by Waka Waka, $1,500, are available for purchase.
HANG YOUR HAT
First things first: Book Casa Mami, an eco-friendly two-bedroom design retreat located on 5 sprawling acres in Pioneertown. L.A.-based hosts Whitney Brown and Carlos Naude have created a modern pueblo-style abode filled with chic furniture and accessories, like the Moooi Cloud sofa by Marcel Wanders. The best part? Pretty much everything, inside and out, is for sale.
Head to Joshua Tree’s main drag, Twentynine Palms Highway, for deliciously robust java courtesy of Joshua Tree Coffee Company, then visit the always-packed Crossroads Cafe for a stick-to-your-ribs, delicious brunch. For dinner, try La Copine, a seasonally focused resto in Flamingo Heights that recently received a rave review from The New York Times.
GET THE LOOK
If you don’t have the boots and the turquoise already, several boutiques in town will help curate your desert style. Twentynine Palms Highway has stellar vintage shops worth exploring, and Jen’s Pirate Booty has a fantastic hat selection. In Flamingo Heights, Moon Wind Trading Co. is filled with flowy dresses and rugged denim.
Located in Landers and situated on a powerful geomagnetic vortex, the Integratron offers a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating 60-minute sound bath experience. Reserve ahead of time, especially if a private experience is preferred.
Besides an afternoon exploring the park, no trip to Joshua Tree is complete without a night at Pappy & Harriets. The Pioneertown restaurant and music venue serves up organic meats and fish cooked on the outdoor grill, along with rollicking performances. At press time, tickets for Jade Bird Oct. 25 were still available.
