For those who lost their houses in the fires, L.A.-based artist Asher Bingham offered a way to preserve a lasting piece of home. Just the night before the flames broke out, Bingham sat at her friend’s house, which would be lost the very next day. Unable to find the right words to express her condolences, Bingham turned to drawing—a hobby that evolved into a career in 2023. “I sat down almost immediately and drew her house,” she recalls. “I sent it to her and hoped that it wasn’t a terrible idea.” Fortunately, the gesture was well-received and soon grew into a form of community outreach via Instagram. “It’s simple, not fancy and straight to the point. If you’ve lost a house in the L.A. fires, I would draw you one for free,” she explains. As thousands of requests poured in, Bingham assembled a team of volunteers—including 17 artists—to help create portraits of homes across the county. Each inquiry equally as important as it is heartwrenching, Bingham shares, “I feel a real responsibility in making sure every request gets answered, and every home is treated as if it was mine.”
