The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted its first awards ceremony in 1928 with just 12 categories to honor the previous year’s cinematic achievements. Fast-forward to 1999, the 71st Academy Awards presented coveted golden statuettes to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and box office hits, including Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love and the stunning cinematography of Saving Private Ryan.
