Andrea Maldonado believes that chocolate is not merely sweet treat, but that it is a truly transcendent experience that soothes the soul and connects us to the past. Maldonado launched Chokolatta, her excellent and innovative chocolate brand, in 2010 based on these principles and ideals. Today, Maldonado and her family use outstanding ingredients, innovative blends and imaginative techniques that include Pre-Hispanic recipes and nods to ancient Mayan culture as they change the way people enjoy chocolate across SoCal and around the world.
How did you become interested in chocolate?
I am a native of Mexico City, photographer by trade and lifelong chocolate lover. When I moved to L.A. in 2010 I wanted to make my own chocolate, so, naturally, I went to YouTube. I started with chocolate covered strawberries and quickly realized how supple and spirited cacao is. That revelation spawned much research and experimentation that has resulted in Chokolatta’s amazing tastes.
What makes chocolate so seductive?
Chocolate is a true character of life that creates emotion and changes moods. The magic of cacao goes beyond mere flavor as it is a food with a lot of nutrients and dietary benefits. How many foods are good for your body and your soul?

Our Amaranth’s are incredibly popular. People love the decadent taste of this superfood blended with our rich chocolate. Another outstanding taste is our Mango Chamoy that mixes sweet and sour in a beautiful way. Because the word chocolate means “Drink of the Gods” and was originally served in liquid form to honored guests, we have created our own hot chocolate blend that speaks to Pre-Hispanic history in the most delicious way.
What is new, newsworthy and on the horizon?
The popularity of our original North Hollywood location led us to open a Chokolatta boutique in Beverly Hills this fall. It is so exciting to see our customer base grow both in our shops and online while creating more jobs and opportunities in our community.
