As a former NFL player and TV personality, Colton Underwood is no stranger to the spotlight, and, in recent years, has been able to use his fame for good. Initially inspired by his cousin Harper, he launched The Colton Underwood Legacy Foundation (coltonslegacy.org) in support of cystic fibrosis in 2017. After experiencing his own personal struggles—and proudly presenting new legislation on mental health resources for collegiate athletes in Washington, D.C.— Underwood pivoted his purpose to mental health advocacy. In the fundraiser’s inaugural year, Underwood—the first The Bachelor lead to come out as gay—launched Pickle! For Purpose! (flipcause.com) This September, a celebrity invitational fundraiser filled with live music, great food and of course, pickleball. Here, Underwood shares his story.
What inspired you to raise money for mental health awareness?
After facing my own challenges and struggles with mental health, I felt a deep personal connection to the issue. Recognizing the stigma that often surrounds these conversations, I was inspired to use my platform to make a positive impact. Raising money for mental health awareness became a mission close to my heart, driven by the belief that—together—we can create a supportive environment where everyone’s mental well-being is valued and prioritized.
Tell us more about the TEAMS Act.
Targeting Emotional and Mental Stability Act or “TEAMS Act” is legislation that would allow schools to receive funding to implement vital programs for student-athletes and break down the barriers that often delay access to mental health. These programs include virtual mental health care services, real-time mental health coaching, 24/7 crisis text lines, virtual peer-to-peer counseling, campus-wide education initiatives to address the stigma associated with mental health issues and other innovative solutions. Having experienced firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate the mental health system, I believe that timely support is crucial. I hope to ensure that no one has to face their mental health journey alone and that getting the right support is both accessible and efficient.
What was your September fundraiser Pickle! For Purpose all about?
Not only were we raising funds for a cause close to my heart—mental health—through this annual event, but we were also getting outside and enjoying doing something active together. We brought celebrities together and created an environment everyone could feel really good in while also contributing to something bigger. From the games to the food to the sense of community, it was an extremely memorable day that helped create support for mental health in a unique and engaging way.
Why is it important to you to give back?
Growing up in a tight-knit community in Washington, I learned firsthand the value of giving back. It’s about recognizing the support and opportunities that have shaped who I am today. As I’ve navigated different paths—from football to reality TV—I’ve seen the impact that even small acts of kindness can have. Giving back isn’t just about helping others; it’s about creating a positive cycle that uplifts everyone. It’s a way of expressing gratitude and ensuring that the values I learned in my upbringing continue to make a difference in the lives of others.
Do you have any advice for those seeking greater involvement in philanthropy?
Start with what resonates deeply with you. Find a cause that aligns with your passions and personal experiences. Authenticity is key—when you genuinely care about a cause, your efforts will have a more significant impact. Don’t underestimate the power of your voice and platform. And remember, making a difference takes time; it’s a journey of learning and growth. Your contributions, no matter how big or small, can create positive change and inspire others to join in making the world a better place.
