When asked about her personal style, Nathalie Saphier’s description is as colorful as her luxe knitwear line, Replica Los Angeles: “Musically inclined Parisienne by way of Encino, with a pit stop at Studio 54,” she explains. Born and bred in L.A. with a 15-year stint in Paris designing for labels such as Isabel Marant (a good friend), Saphier launched the line two years ago as an homage to glam rock and a celebration of color, sparkle and humor. “It feels like a lot of what’s out there is too basic, too beige, too bland,” she explains. “There’s no whimsy, no fun—and if it is fun, it’s probably too young or it’s Gucci.” For fall 2019, she looked to old Hollywood, the Laurel Canyon music scene, ’70s skaters and surfers, and ’80s Sunset Strip for inspiration. Saphier—who relies on high-waisted jeans, oversize blazers and something sparkly as a go-to uniform—has big plans for her brand, with the possibility of a men’s line in the future. Here, the Silver Lake resident shares her vibrant picks.
1. “I’m the biggest fan of everything Replica, but if I had to choose my favorite sweater for fall, it would probably be our PILLS pullover. The motif is so funny, colorful and a little edgy. It looks like confetti until you get up close.” $378, replicalosangeles.com
2. “Rarely leaving my wrist, the black and gold Rivale Double Tour bracelet from Hermès has that perfect juxtaposition of punk/chic that totally makes me tick.” $560, Beverly Hills, hermes.com
3. “I cannot get enough of these. They’re the perfect shape, the perfect height and I will take them in a size 39, all colors, all motifs, please.” Kiki pumps in patent fluorescent leather, $645, Saint Laurent, Beverly Hills, ysl.com
4. “I own just about every kind of glitter hosiery out there: crew, knee-high, thigh-high, tights. I bought my first glitter socks at Comme des Garçons in 1997 and have never looked back. I am particularly coveting some Gucci knee-highs at the moment. Yum.” Lamé GG socks, $155, Beverly Hills, gucci.com
5. “Clutch bags are an everyday staple of mine, and L.A. designer Clare V.’s fit the bill for any outfit or occasion. I love options, and she certainly delivers, offering them in a tantalizing array of colors, patterns and textures.” Foldover clutch, $295, locations vary, clarev.com
6. “This lamp is so me, so Replica and so L.A. I love the tongue-in-cheek, Cali-kitsch and coolness of this lamp, which makes my living room look like Club Tropicana.” Ocean Palm floor lamp, $399, CB2, West Hollywood, cb2.com
7. “Sylvie Auvray—who creates incredible jewelry using ceramics, metal, enamel and semiprecious stones—is an amazingly talented artist and friend based in Paris. Her whimsical statement pieces adorn me on the regular.” Bronze Face ring, $325, by Sylvie Auvray at MOCA, DTLA, mocastore.com
8. “Jillian Dempsey’s Gold Sculpting Bar is an amazing, vibrating bar that massages, tones and contours the face, and makes me look as though I’ve spent the last month at a Swiss beauty clinic.” $195, Violet Grey, Melrose Place, violetgrey.com
9. “Starr [Hout] and Laura [Cramer] from Apiece Apart sent me a bottle one Christmas, and I was hooked. It’s a 100% organic blend of plants and essential oils that smells wonderful. I slather it everywhere, generously.” Everyday Oil Mainstay Blend, 8 fl. oz. for $48, Midland Shop, Culver City, shop-midland.com; everydayoil.com
