The multi-media show is headed to the City of Angels.
Over the years, many artists have attempted to capture the essence of Los Angeles—its glitz, glam, grittiness and everything else that captivates. When Ed Ruscha moved to L.A. in 1954 to study commercial art, the city’s parking lots, billboards, and overall architectural landscape inspired him to create some of his most familiar works, many of which can be seen in the upcoming ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN at LACMA (lacma.org). Previously shown in New York last fall, the exhibition is Ruscha’s first comprehensive, multi-media show in more than 20 years. The artist’s early work produced in Europe will be displayed, along with his photographs of the City of Angels and two installations, the Chocolate Room and the Course of Empire, both shown at the Venice Biennale in different decades. Curated by LACMA’s Michael Govan, the show will include additional pieces not shown in New York. “I am greatly looking forward to this exhibit,” says Ruscha. “It will be like various acquaintances gathering for a reunion.”
