Gala in the Garden

| October 23, 2013 | Parties

More than 600 guests arrived through the garage entrance of the Hammer Museum for the celebrated cultural institution’s annual fundraiser, co-chaired by Bottega Veneta’s creative director, Tomas Maier. The museum’s “no red carpet” attitude set the tone for an intimate evening. Guests mingled over cocktails and explored the exhibitions before dinner, prepared by Lucques’ Suzanne Goin, was served in the courtyard. Artists, collectors and celebrities sat at wood-plank tables under swooping strands of amber bulbs. Being honored at the dinner were lauded playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner (Angels in America, Lincoln) and artist Robert Gober, famous for his meticulous recreations of real-life objects. Hollywood leading lady Viola Davis and artist Charles Ray each gave tributes to the honorees, while witty political commentary interspersed speeches throughout the night. Additional guests, not pictured, included Leonard Nimoy, Catharine and Jeffrey Soros, Maria and Bill Bell, Peter Morton, China Chow, Laura Mulleavy, Bettina Korek, garden activist Fritz Haeg, Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, and artists Ed Ruscha, AndrĂ© Saraiva, Doug Aitken and Alex Israel. A performance by singer K.D. Lang capped the event, which also saw an additional $2 million donation for children’s programs from gala attendees Jeanne and Tony Pritzker.
