THE PROJECT
When her clients—a retired couple with grown children—requested a full remodel for their Indian Wells home, Aimee Meisgeier, principal and lead designer of AM Interior Design, knew exactly what to do. Thankfully, they favored a traditional style with bold colors and patterns, a style very much in line with Meisgeier’s own aesthetic. “The clients love color along with the shapes and patterns of the Hacienda style of architecture,” she explains. “They wanted to incorporate both into the remodel of the home so it resembled the rustic and traditional feel of a Hacienda-style house but with a contemporary flair.”

THE PLAN
Meisgeier’s clients wanted to majorly update the interiors and exteriors of the home with new finishes, windows and doors, fixtures and appliances, and reconfigure rooms to provide an overall better layout and flow throughout. “We took the whole home down to the studs and rebuilt it accordingly,” Meisgeier shares, noting that her clients love to entertain. “One of the major revisions was to the kitchen layout to provide a more cohesive flow to the dining and living area, as well as including chef’s kitchen aspects,” she adds. “We enlarged the opening between rooms for better circulation between the areas, replaced all kitchen cabinets, appliances and materials, and added an 11-inch marble island to provide ample space for guests plus a dedicated breakfast nook area with custom built-ins.”

The designer made sure to include multiple conversation zones in the great room with different seating areas, adding to the home’s entertaining aspects. Palette-wise, Meisgeier stuck to a neutral desert color palette for the wall paint, floor color and more—a perfect backdrop to the colorful pattern-filled tiles, furniture, wallpaper and rugs.

THE DETAILS
The entry sets the tone for the entire home with its wide plank white oak wood floors, pale limestone-finished walls, a colorful Drea rug from Stark and vibrant artwork by Connor Liljestrom. The look continues into the great room’s living area, which features a Four Hands sofa, accent chairs from Lawson-Fenning and Shoppe Amber Interiors, and accent tables from Four Hands and RH. “A fireplace was wrapped with a traditional compass and star terracotta tile that provided a neutral texture to the large spaces that didn’t compete with the bold colors of the Ralph Lauren fabrics on the custom chairs and pillows,” Meisgeier notes, adding that the dining room uses the same Auda Sinda rug, something that helps tie the spaces together.
“The clients love color, so a custom green Sherwin-Williams paint color was used for the kitchen island and breakfast nook to provide that wish,” says the designer, who made sure to keep entertaining top of mind when putting this space together.
From the primary bedroom to the guest rooms, Meisgeier created welcoming spaces with lots of texture and patterns throughout. “I wanted the bedrooms to feel warm and cozy, and for each of them to have a different color palette—but ones that all flowed together into a cohesive design for the house,” she shares. “I stuck with earthy tones and vintage-inspired patterns to provide inviting spaces that felt homey and relaxing.”

The designer wanted each bathroom to shine and stand out. “Different Hacienda and desert-inspired wallpaper or tile patterns and colors were used to achieve that,” Meisgeier notes. “I wanted them all to have a wow-factor that made it hard to pick a favorite.”

Outside, the pool deck was refaced with tumbled brick and various sizes and for visual interest was laid in a random pattern. “The brick’s terracotta color was chosen to blend in with the desert surrounding,” says Meisgeier. “A stem wall with integrated water features was added to produce relaxing sounds to unwind and chill.”

THE OUTCOME
After two years, Meisgeier and her team completed the project. “The house has a traditional Hacienda feel but with a contemporary twist that makes the design feel fresh and innovative,” she shares. “The pops of color and fun patterns throughout each room make each of them their own special moment in time and bring a sense of happiness.”
