“Our goal is to redefine the fitness lifestyle for the urban sophisticate,” says Sebastian Schoepe, president of RSG Group North America—a global fitness and lifestyle leader with 17 brands, including Gold’s Gym, McFIT and the JOHN REED family. Launched this spring, its new private but inclusive fitness club, HEIMAT (heimat.com), is a holistic day-to-night fitness, wellness, culinary and cultural concept all under one roof. “The word ‘heimat’ is a German concept with no singular meaning, but it relates to a place, a feeling or some detail in everyday life, all of which can trigger the sense of home. Los Angeles, and Hollywood in particular, was the perfect spot to debut HEIMAT because of the diverse backgrounds and rich tableau we hope to draw upon for members and the membership experience.”

Housed in a converted industrial building on La Brea, the 75,000-square-foot, five-story global flagship boasts advanced equipment and technology, and a variety of fitness and wellness options. “HEIMAT offers members a comprehensive 360-degree approach to their fitness and wellness goals with renowned German-made gym80 weight machines and award-winning Technogym cardio machines on the floor, as well as access to an unlimited array of exceptional boutique-style group classes,” says Schoepe. Classes focus on strength, cardio, metabolic conditioning, stretch and recovery, yoga (yin, vinyasa, kundalini), barre, Pilates, cycling, HIIT, boot camp, TRX and functional fitness. “Beyond that, HEIMAT will offer members-only amenities like a full-service boutique spa providing services such as facials, manicures, pedicures, IV therapy, massage therapy, lymphatic drainage, assisted stretching and more, while a rooftop pool—complete with private cabanas and fire pits overlooking Hollywood all the way to Santa Monica—complements the luxurious environment.”

On HEIMAT’s top floor is the Clubhouse—an all-day coworking and event space where members can relax, take a meeting, or gather for inspiring wellness and lifestyle programming. HEIMAT also partnered with Michelin-starred chef Michael Mina in developing Mother Tongue (michaelmina.net), a plant-forward restaurant concept that celebrates global, clean ingredients. Notes Schoepe, “We wanted to provide both members and the public a fantastic setting for anything from vibrant group dinners to happy hours to just a quick bite to eat after an intense workout.”
“It’s impossible to have a conversation about food these days and ignore the importance of how it impacts everyone involved, from growers to our guests,” says Mina, whose MINA Group operates over 40 restaurants worldwide, including namesakes in San Diego and Las Vegas. “We’ve been having deeper discussions around how we can focus on balance in the cuisine and pay more attention to macros like fiber, healthier fats, complex carbohydrates and clean proteins. The concept was partly inspired by Indie Superette, our health food-focused market and cafe developed by Patric Yumul in San Francisco, and the goal of Mother Tongue is to create an incredible dining experience rooted in wellness.”

Mina had been dreaming of doing a contemporary fine dining wellness concept like this since opening Indie Superette in 2020. “HEIMAT is truly an incredible project that aligns with everything Mother Tongue is about,” he says, noting that while HEIMAT is a private community, Mother Tongue will be open to the public. Designed by AD100 interior designer Martin Brudnizki, the playful interior uses colors, textures and patterns to create a fun, eclectic and welcoming atmosphere. Mina’s particularly excited about the outdoor dining area adjacent to the pool, where patrons can gather, unwind and enjoy bold, balanced dishes. “Corporate chef David Varley and I are working through the menu now and having a blast reimagining comfort foods from around the world through this lens of balanced nutrition and clean product. The possibilities are endless.”
HEIMAT is built around the philosophy that well-being extends off the fitness floor. “As the world’s first concept fitness club, HEIMAT Los Angeles will be a day-to-night destination that bridges the gap between morning workouts, lunch meetings, afternoons by the pool, dinners with friends and late-night drinks,” says Schoepe of the finely tailored lifestyle hub that’s rooted in fitness, but offers so much more. “Health and well-being are not just a physical pursuit, but must be nourished through all senses.”
