Following years of careful restoration and a design-forward transformation, Hotel June Malibu has arrived, offering both Angelenos and out-of-towners a peaceful place to escape by the sea.
While there’s no shortage of gorgeous L.A. neighborhoods, with its storied history and stunning vistas, Malibu stands out in a league of its own. Yet, despite its popularity, there are a limited number of hotels in the area.

That’s all changing with the arrival of Hotel June Malibu. Most recently called Native Hotel, and before that, the iconic Malibu Riviera Motel—an artistic haven founded by Wayne and Helen Wilcox in 1949 that drew in numerous luminaries, including Bob Dylan, who wrote the 1975 album Blood on the Tracks there— Hotel June Malibu is a collaboration between Native Hotel’s ownership (Shaun Gilbert, Reem Al-Zahawi and Sam Shendow) and Proper Hospitality. This new iteration is an airy, minimalist dream that feels fresh while also preserving the property’s unique history.

This can especially be seen in the lobby, where Gilbert and Shendow restored the original mixed stone fireplace and redwood beams. The welcoming lobby is the center of the hotel’s activity—guests can check out the day’s activities (morning yoga, meditation and more); grab a coffee and a Gjusta pastry); or just relax and read on the adjoining patio. There’s not a proper restaurant on-site yet, but small snacks are available, and great restaurants—like Broad Street Oyster Co., The Sunset and Nobu Malibu—are a short drive away. As far as things to do on-site, there’s the inviting, beautifully designed pool and electric bikes, while beaches, hikes and shopping are all close by.

Each of the hotel’s 13 rooms includes a private patio, cozy Casper beds and lots of lovely details—think pieces by local artists, George Nelson bubble lamps, Aesop bath products and deadstock African fabric robes to throw on while there.
