These five esteemed museums are offering Angelenos exhibitions nothing short of extraordinary.

1. The Getty
As a leading cultural and philanthropic institution in Los Angeles, the Getty will be full of artistic immersion this winter. View the works of 19th century painting and sculpting giants such as Van Gogh, Monet and Rodin. Or catch versatile German artist Hans Holbein the Younger and his exclusive portraits of patrons at Holbein: Capturing Character in the Renaissance. On your way out, stop by the Getty’s most recent 17-piece exhibition through Feb. 20, La Surprise: Watteau in Los Angeles, a 12-painting celebration of French painter and draft sman Antoine Watteau. 2. MoCA
Modernity never goes out of style. Make sure to see MoCA’s ongoing exhibits for an alluring afternoon this winter. Peek at Pipilotti Rist: Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor, the Swiss media artist’s installation at The Geffen Contemporary at MoCA, for an exploration of psychological landscapes. Rist’s installations explore relationships of video and the body; exterior environments and interior psychological landscapes; along with reason and instinct. Jennifer Packer: Every Shut Eye Ain’t—an allegorical tableaux of commemorative floral still lifes and portraits—is also worth a viewing. DTLA, moca.org
3. The Broad
Through April 3, The Broad presents Since Unveiling: Selected Acquisitions of a Decade, consisting of 60 works from 29 astounding artists. This special event coincides with Eli and Edythe Broad’s 10-year public opening announcement of the Diller + Renfro building on Grand Avenue, graced with a honeycomb veil design. 4. LACMA
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is lighting up with some of the finest exhibits on the West Coast. First and foremost, make sure to view The Obama Portraits Tour—Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Obama and Amy Sherald’s portrait of the former first lady—before Jan. 2. Check out In the Now: Gender and Nation in Europe through Feb. 13, with selections from the Sir Mark Fehrs Haukohl photography collection, which focuses on beauty, femininity and what it means to be a woman today. Or learn about Indigenous creative resilience starting Dec. 12 with Mixpantli: Contemporary Echoes—an installation with an emphasis on native cartography and connection of L.A. and Mexico’s artistic traditions. 5. Hammer Museum
Head to the Hammer to experience exhibitions that transcend the norm. Catch No Humans Involved before Jan. 9, where seven artists strive to disrupt the Western modes of humanism. Or dive into Hammer Projects: David Hartt, a multimedia installation that illustrates colonial America in the 19th century.
