Since 2019, Louis Vuitton has worked with quintessential L.A. artist Alex Israel to visually bring the spirit of its fragrances to life. It started with three California-inspired scents created by Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer Jacques Cavalier Belletrud—Sun Song, Cactus Garden and Afternoon Swim—and every year since, the Israel-Belletrud collection has steadily built.
Pacific Chill—the latest multisensory launch in the Louis Vuitton Cologne Perfumes collection—brings the duo together again. With packaging designed by Israel and an uplifting scent by Cavalier Belletrud, the scent—inspired by a detoxifying juice the latter enjoyed while spending time with the artist—digs deep into Southern California culture. “I tried to recreate the fruits’ textures like a fresh fruit cocktail, this pulp effect, the fluffy side of fruits and citrus,” says Cavalier Belletrud of the fragrance, which emanates scents of blackcurrant, carrot seed, cedar, lemon and aromatic herbs. Meant to activate the senses, uplift the spirit and promote a general sense of well-being, the fragrance fits into L.A.’s detox and wellness culture beautifully. “For me, California is a detox,” adds the perfumer. “It refers to natural products, to simple things that are good for emotions and sensations.”
For the packaging, Israel created a California seascape inspired by one of his favorite hikes, Paseo Miramar. “I’m a big walker,” he shares. “Walking is not as common in a city like L.A., where everything is so spread out and people are so accustomed to driving everywhere, but I find the space of a long walk to be crucial.” louisvuitton.com
