On May 4, Lightstone celebrated the opening of its first project in L.A.—two connected lifestyle hotels, the Moxy and AC, in Downtown Los Angeles.
"When we first got our approvals for the project, we were approved for 727 keys, and as developers, we felt that was too big for one brand for what we do," said president Mitchell Hochberg of the property which offers 727 rooms across 37 stories at 1260 S. Figueroa Street. "So we decided to do two brands."

Lightstone previously developed five playful, design-forward Moxy hotels in New York City (Williamsburg being the newest), and one in South Beach, Florida—part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio. "This was exciting to us because of the renaissance Downtown," Hochberg said of the DTLA location, near the Los Angeles Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena. He noted how guests are already looking to the hotels for lodging after attending Lakers games and events.

Moxy DTLA captures the adventurous spirit of California with bold art and cheeky design touches, such as a motorcyle in the lobby, cacti on the roofdeck and nods to LAX airport on the hall carpets. "We were thinking about the desert, and what immediately drew our imagination was the movie 'Easy Rider,'" said Yabu Pushelberg's Glenn Pushelberg, who designed the project with YP co-founder George Yabu. Those who desire a more luxurious experience will opt to stay in the AC Hotel, a Marriott-owned brand with Spanish roots and equal emphasis on design.

Guests of both accessible lifestyle hotels will have access to shared public spaces and dining and entertainment venues. Bar Moxy is a hip lobby bar and all-day café , while AC's La Lo La rooftop serves tapas against a stunning backdrop of the Hollywood Hills. Coming next will be Level 8, eight unique food and beverage concepts on the eighth floor of the Moxy from Mark and Jonnie Houston of Houston Hospitality (Good Times at Davey Wayne's, No Vacancy).

An opera perfomance punctuated dinner, and the opening night celebration also included entertainment from DJ Linda Marigliano, K Emelin and Shaun Ross; tarot card and aura readings by Molly Dario and Halo Auragraphic; and make-your-own ice cream sandwiches at a Coolhaus truck outside.
