There’s a new speakeasy in town and instead of being shrouded in mystery, this one promises to welcome imbibers with a warm embrace.
Located just below Seven Grand in downtown, Bar CDMX will debut with its arms wide open on Aug. 31. Its hours of operation are from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
The neon red sign beckons guests to the basement bar. A nod to the bar mantra that “what you can’t see can’t hurt you,” it features a broken pair of glasses alongside the glowing establishment name.
As the name suggests, Bar CDMX is an ode to Mexico City and its music, art and subcultures. The new concept comes from Pouring With Heart hospitality group, which is also behind its top-level neighbor Seven Grand, in addition to The Normandie Club, All Season Brewing Co. and Arts District Brewing Co.
“We wanted to create the feeling of finding a bar hiding, tucked away in Mexico City,” said designer Jared Meisler, whose credits also include Roger Room and Bar Lubitsch. “Bar CDMX is in the basement of a 100-year-old building, inheriting beautiful elements.”
Bar CDMX is inspired by its team’s personal experiences of living and traveling throughout Latin America. The best example perhaps is lead bartender Dante Chavez, who grew up in Oaxaca and spent time throughout his life in Mexico City.
Chavez brings authentic tastes of CDMX to life through the cocktail menu’s lineup of refreshing creations. Highlighting rum and agave-based spirits, you can opt among fruit-forward beverages like the Mango Mezcal Margarita, Pineapple Caipirinha and Mezcal Paloma.
What’s more, Bar CDMX offers some of the best-priced cocktails in town with a general price range of $9 to $13. There will also be a daily happy hour from 3 to 8 p.m. with $2 off cocktails and beer.
In addition to the lively beverages, Bar CDMX will no doubt gather a loyal following for its recreational offerings. Here, you can also find a pool table and Spanish-language versions of classic arcade games.
And to celebrate the opening, Angelenos can start trying Bar CDMX’s cocktails now by participating in Pasaporte de Cóctel. Head to another Pouring with Heart spot ( Seven Grand, Las Perlas, Caña and Golden Gopher) and grab a passport card, which you can get stamped each time you try a unique Bar CDMX cocktail at the aforementioned locations. Once you’ve gathered all the stamps, journey to your final destination, Bar CDMX, by Sept. 9 and you’ll be entered to win prizes like a Bar CDMX gift card, swag bags and hosted game room play.
Bar CDMX is located at 515 W 7th St 90014.
