Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe have been quite busy. Not only have the designers recently expanded their Beverly Boulevard shop to now include Household by Nickey Kehoe—a destination for beautifully curated housewares and gifts—but they’ve also been balancing numerous design projects across town and the U.S.
For a recent Hancock Park project, the team tackled an older English Tudor home that needed a gut renovation and a large addition. “Like many older homes in Hancock Park, the maid’s room was in the back of the house next to the kitchen,” Nickey explains. “These were service homes when they were built in the ’20s. We’ve renovated many homes in the area, turning the staff quarters into a family room, open floor-plan kitchen and living space.”

After spending ample time walking the house with architect and builder Bob Glaus, Nickey and Kehoe experimented with floor plans and layouts. “Bob Glaus is brilliant with a floor plan so it all fell pretty quickly into place,” Nickey notes. From there, initial mood boards were created. “We were inspired by the architecture of the house,” Nickey says. “We always take our main cues from what the house wants and from how our clients envision themselves living in it.”

The design team curated a gorgeous mix of materials and pieces for the project, all of which add up to a comfortable and elegant space. Paint from Farrow & Ball (Cooking Apple Green in the library, Dead Salmon in the sitting room, Winbourne White in several spaces) and Portola Paints & Glazes (Story Teller in the living room, Pepper Sam on the library’s trim) coat the walls in faded shades that feel warm and lived-in. A thoughtful mix of custom pieces, antiques and new items from a variety of local shops and showrooms, including Hollyhock, Reborn Antiques, Lucca Antiques, Hollywood at Home and Lawson Fenning, look like they’ve always been there.

While the entire home is stunning, Nickey has his favorite areas. “There is a beautiful open feeling in the [primary] bedroom. There are windows on every side of the room so you feel as though you’re in a treehouse,” he shares. The primary bathroom is also a standout. “[It’s] not massive but very English in feel and cozy. The ceiling is low and there is a large bank of windows—it feels like an English sunroom.” The dining room capitalizes on the beautiful light with a ceiling coated in a reflective high-gloss paint, while the library is his favorite room of the lot. Painted in gorgeous shades and filled with a c ustom sofa, a coffee table from Galerie Sommerlath and a pair of walnut chairs from Habité placed atop a rug from Amadi Carpets, the space is beautifully balanced and welcoming. “When we landed on the colors for the library, which we debated for weeks, we were all over the moon,” says Nickey. “It’s still my favorite color combo of all time—mint green and deep aubergine.”

The family is thrilled with their new traditional and tailored home. “They love it,” says Nickey. “It’s so fun to go to parties there and see... everyone enjoying the house.”
