Designed by lifestyle artisan Kelly Wearstler, the suites embody its surrounding environment by pulling from the organic tones of the California coast. The result is a vibrant, yet tranquil space that mirrors the classic laidback SoCal spirit.
As an extension of the hotel’s West Coast aesthetic, Wearstler used sandy, warm and neutral colors akin to L.A.’s sandy beaches and gorgeous sunsets. What’s more, the suites feature a mix of vintage, contemporary and heavily textural features. Just take a look at the high-pile rigs, handwoven tapestries and chunky boucle fabrics.

Honing in on the neighboring beaches, the suites’ furnishings include a driftwood coffee table, and the dining area taps into the indoor-outdoor feel with stellar window views and the inclusion of palm trees that act as a natural canopy.
Wearstler also used the mid-century American Nakashima lantern ceiling fixture to reflect the light and airy nature of the coast. Low heights and bulbous profiles also propel the space’s inherent serenity.
The upgraded suites are further matched by Santa Monica Proper’s various amenities. Guests can expect beds fitted with Italian linens and custom hypoallergenic pillows and blankets. Meanwhile, bathrooms include walk-in travertine showers, Aesop bath products and marble vanities.
A Santa Monica Proper stay invites travelers and locals to experience Wearstler’s elevated modernity coupled with the hotel’s inherent historical nature as a 1920s-era landmark. Alongside the soothing suite experience, guests can indulge in a proper relaxing getaway by visiting its Surya Ayurvedic Hotel Spa. It also offers over 24,000 square feet of meeting and event spaces.
