In early 2024, a passion project from executive chef Imran Ali Mookhi of Michelin-rated Khan Saab will open its doors in Southern California, bringing a globally inspired culinary experience to the area. Inspired by Afghani, Indian and Pakistani hawker markets and bazaar food stalls, the forthcoming restaurant called SHOR aims to reimagine what contemporary halal dining offerings can entail in a vibrant, upscale atmosphere.
“Shaping the vision of SHOR has been a journey grounded in my upbringing amidst the vibrant culture of Pakistan and passion for elevating Desi cuisine,” said Mookhi. “Fueled by the success of Khan Saab, SHOR's new location affords us the chance to captivate a wide-ranging audience, introducing them to an exciting blend of culture and cuisine that goes beyond the culinary expectations of the area.”
While staying true to traditional regional flavors with everything from curated seafood dishes to veggie-based entrees, SHOR will introduce modern innovations as well. An entire non-alcoholic bar program overseen by expert mixologist Ahmad Hosseini will provide handcrafted zero-proof mocktails, non-alcoholic wines and a water bar menu. Pastry is also receiving special attention under the lead of Le Cordon Bleu alumnus, Mark Medina, who will prepare an array of fusion desserts such as saffron and cardamom-enriched sweets finished tableside with elements like edible gold and chocolate sauces.
The dining room aims to bring the energetic essence of Desi culture to life through a kaleidoscopic color palette and textures crafted by the team at Akar Studios.
Guests can anticipate not just a meal, but a cultural journey when SHOR opens next year. With authentic regional halal cuisine anchored in generations of tradition, while complemented by modern sensibilities, the restaurant ushers in a new era for adventurous local diners and global food connoisseurs alike.
