Spirit of Sundance

| July 30, 2013 | Parties

THE PARTY Leading ladies Kerry Washington, Octavia Spencer and Julie Delpy were joined by Hollywood heavyweights Robert Redford and Jason Reitman for a Sundance Institute benefit dinner where the work of late film critic Roger Ebert was given a collective thumbs-up. THE SCENE Guests gathered at The Lot Studios—transformed into an alfresco extravaganza for the event—to dine in celebration of artistry and vision in independent film and The Lot’s Roger Ebert Scholarship for Film Criticism, a program that will provide grants to young critics covering the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Cinematic icon and Sundance mastermind Robert Redford presented Ebert’s beloved widow, Chaz, with the Vanguard Leadership Award on behalf of her departed husband, while Fruitvale Station Director Ryan Coogler received the Vanguard Award. The nod honored the emerging auteur’s award-winning flick, which nabbed both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at this year’s festival. THE HIGHLIGHTS Redford’s presentation featured a video tribute by Steve James, the Chicago filmmaker who shot the documentary Hoop Dreams, a Roger Ebert favorite. Photography by Alberto E.
