For a long time, lingerie has been a category of extremes, with neutral, sturdy basics at one end of the spectrum, and ultraprovocative— and intimidating—dominatrix styles at the other. Helping bridge the gap is Supernatural, a newly opened boutique offering beautiful lingerie and swimwear from independent sustainable brands in a chic, comfortable setting.

“There’s this idea that lingerie is a costume for sex or something you wear to attract the gaze of the other,” says Ida Prosky, co-founder of Supernatural, a recently opened boutique on West Third Street. “But we believe women should wear what they want to wear when they want to wear it, and however way they want to.”

Based in L.A., Prosky, originally from Copenhagen, runs the business with Carlie Quezada, who first opened Supernatural in Birmingham, Mich. Prosky initially was a customer of the store before partnering in the business. “I thought there should be something of this caliber in L.A.,” she explains.

Designed with patterned rugs, stylish furniture, plenty of plants and great lighting, the L.A. boutique has a welcoming vibe that’s perfect for trying on lingerie—something that can oftentimes be stressful.

A selection of ethically made, mostly European brands like Copenhagen Cartel, Fleur of England and Bordelle line the shop, which strives to set the stage for a fun and empowering experience. “Lingerie is such a powerful tool of self-expression and confidence,” says Quezada, who also emphasizes Supernatural’s focus on offering pieces for a range of moods and personalities. “Sometimes I like to wear something really fun and wild, and other times I’m in the mood for a cute cotton set. I think that each individual person has various avenues of expression,” she adds. “We try to think about those different moments.” supernaturallingerie.com
