Inspired by her time living with her rock ’n’ roll father last fall, Kimberly Stewart sparked the idea for her latest venture, The Realm by Kimberly Stewart (therealmks.com), a full-service luxury home organization company. Here, the taskmaster gets real about conquering daunting projects, finding balance in the home and the key to living well.
You’ve recently launched your new business, The Realm by Kimberly Stewart. Tell us about it! I started the business in Palm Beach when I was there in September. I was at my dad’s house, and I knew I was going to be there for a while. I very much like my home and where I’m staying to be in order. I took one look at the pantry and I was like, ‘I can’t live with this pantry.’ I started to get into my organizing mode, and I did a complete makeover and posted it on my Instagram just for fun. I got such a good reaction out of it, and that’s how the business came about. It’s a hobby of mine I’ve been doing since I was little; then it turned into an actual profession. I decided to move forward and make it a business.
Have you always been an organizer? Since I was young, I’ve always been into organizing. I was the kid who organized my Barbies and organized their clothes and put everything away. From a young age that was my go-to thing wherever I was, especially because I traveled so much as a young kid. Whenever I went to a new hotel or a new place, I liked all of my belongings in order. It gave me some sense of safety in the constant moving. And not only that, but I like everything to be pleasing to the eye as well and uniformed in place.
Why is now the perfect time to introduce The Realm? COVID has really given us all an opportunity to be present and take a look around—giving us time to reevaluate not only our lives but our homes. It’s put a pause on people’s lives. In terms of organizing and remodeling and redoing, people are in their spaces and there’s so much clutter and so much chaos around them, they think, ‘This has to be dealt with.’ It’s in front of your face, and you can’t hide from it anymore.
What’s your No. 1 tip for getting organized? My No. 1 tip I always tell my clients is to not get overwhelmed. The initial feeling of going into something, it seems so daunting and so big, but taking it step-by-step is super important. And I always write everything down because when clients can see how we’re going to execute the plan, it makes them feel better; it doesn’t seem so overwhelming
How does an organized home lead to a more balanced life? When spaces are clutter-free and everything has a place, life just flows easier.
